Young Adults with Disabilities in Transition Initiative: Workshops for Individuals with Disabilities and Their Families All workshops are conducted by The Partnership and will be held at 6:00 pm at Jewish Residential Services. Individuals may register for any or all trainings by emailing Shani Lasin. Person Centered Thinking Thursday, October 6, 2011 Imagine how much easier life could be for a person with disabilities if people focused on the person and not his/her disability? Making this shift from system-centered thinking to person-centered thinking is the focus of this training. This presentation defines and describes how and why to incorporate person-centered thinking into Individual Support Plans (ISPs) and other formal plans and the impact this type of planning can have on a person's everyday life. (3 hours) Planning for Life After High School Monday, November 14, 2011 This training offers guidance to families and people with disabilities on how to design a successful transition process for students moving from high school to adulthood. The workshop will focus on employment, recreational activities, friendships, communication, continuing education, transportation, and rights and responsibilities, among other topics. (3 hours) Long Term Planning for your Family Member January 23, 2012 Estate planning ensures a person has financial resources to meet his/her needs beyond the capacity of a guardian or parent to provide care, or after the death of the guardian or parent. In this workshop, an experienced estate planning attorney will cover the types of trusts that meet the needs of a person with a long-term disability. S/he will discuss how resources can be arranged to protect an individual's access to his/her rightful government benefits. (2 hours) Sexual Abuse Awareness for Self-Advocates March 19, 2012 Sexual abuse can happen to anyone, however, people with disabilities are especially at risk for sexual abuse. This training describes types of abuse, including unwanted touch, physical force and non-physical force. Individuals will learn how to make themselves safer and how to fight against abuse. (2 hours) Updates You Can Use May 14, 2012 This presentation includes information about employment, lifesharing (an alternative to group homes for people who need residential services), rate setting, billing practices, and waiver allocations.
